HOW TO MAKE PIZZA SAUCE FROM SCRATCH?

Heat a small saucepan over medium heat. Melt the butter and add the olive oil. Add the onion, celery, and garlic and saute until soft. I used my Cuisinart Mini-Prep to mince these ingredients and make them smooth.

Add tomato sauce, tomato paste, and water and combine well. Add all the remaining ingredients.

ADDING TOMATO SAUCE TO THE POT

Turn the heat to low and cover. Simmer on low for 30 minutes. Taste for seasoning and add more salt and pepper if necessary. Don’t forget to remove the bay leaf. Enjoy!

MAKING PIZZA

CAN YOU FREEZE HOMEMADE PIZZA SAUCE?

Yes, you absolutely can! I usually make a double batch and freeze half, just to have on hand when the kids out of nowhere say “We want pizza Dad!”. Once cooled, pop the rest into zip bags and freeze it flat. That way you can stack your bags. You can keep the sauce in the refrigerator for about a week, and it lasts for 3 months in the freezer.

  • 2 Tbsp Olive Oil

  • 1 Bay Leaf
  • 1/2 Tsp Fennel Seeds (secret ingredient)
  • Salt and Pepper (to taste)
