variations and substitutions
- FRESH VS FROZEN FRUIT: Options here are fresh or frozen fruit to make this drink. Frozen strawberries are usually available year-round. But if you prefer fresh fruit and strawberries are not available raspberries or blackberries would make an awesome substitute.
- ALCOHOL OPTIONS: The classic combination of strawberries and vodka is always a win in my book but other options include white rum or gin.
- LEMON OR LIME JUICE: Lemon or lime juice helps balance the sweet and sour against the strawberries which are naturally sweet.
- TOP OFF LIQUIDS: Topping off your drink with some fizz is a must. I like to add a lemon/lime soda or sparkling water/club soda to top off my drink. The soda adds a nice lemony sweetness. Another option is tonic water or ginger ale.
- ICE CUBES vs FROZEN FRUIT: Ice cubes make any drink better but I personally prefer cold and frosty rather than ice cubes in a drinks. Ice cubes just tend to water the drink down and it dilutes it’s flavor pretty quickly. So I usually freeze my fresh strawberries to make ensure my cocktail is frosty and delicious.
OPTIONAL INGREDIENTS
- SIMPlE SYRUP/SUGAR/HONEY: Strawberries are naturally sweet so there is no need for added sugar but if your strawberries are very tart you can add 1 to 2 tbsp of simple syrup (1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup granulated sugar, heat/stir until sugar dissolves) or sugar/honey to the drink.
- HERBS: The combination of mint or basil leaves with strawberries always goes well.
PRO Tips for SUCCESS
- SWEET VS TART: Some people like sweet cocktails and others like them more tart; so taste your fruit ahead of time and adjust the sweetness accordingly by adding more citrus or more sugar/honey.
- MAKE IT SUGAR-FREE: There are many sweetener options including honey, agave, or stevia/swerve/monk fruit instead of sugar to make it sugar-free for all the waistline watchers out there.
- WATCH OUT FOR HIDDEN SUGAR: Sugar is also present in lemon-lime soda and tonic water which adds more sweetness too. Another option is using diet/zero-sugar lemon-lime soda or sparkling water.
- ADD EXTRA FLAVOR: Mint is a great flavor to add but can be omitted completely. Basil is commonly used with strawberries too.
