WHAT IS SWISS STEAK?

Swiss steak is a classic American dish that typically consists of tender cuts of beef, often round or chuck steak, that have been pounded or mechanically tenderized. The meat is then coated in flour and browned before being slow-cooked in a garlic sauce. This sauce could include ingredients like tomatoes, onions, garlic, and sometimes bell peppers. The dish is called “Swiss” not because it originates from Switzerland, but because the technique of tenderizing the meat is known as “swissing.” The result is a hearty, comforting dish with tender beef and a flavorful, thickened sauce.

INGREDIENTS to prepare easy garlic swiss steak:

  • Cubed Steak or Sandwich Steak

EASY GARLIC SWISS STEAK

HOW DO YOU PREPARE SWISS STEAK?

To begin tenderize the beef with a meat mallet. Salt and pepper the beef on both sides.

Tenderizing the Beef

Dredge the beef in flour and set aside.

DREDGED BEEF

Heat the oil or bacon fat in the Dutch Oven over medium-high heat. Brown the beef on both sides.

BROWNING THE BEEF

It’s important not to completely cook the beef in this step. Once the beef has browned set it aside.

PLATE OF FRIED BEEF

In the same Dutch Oven add your garlic for one minute (until it becomes fragrant) then deglaze the bottom of the pan with one cup of beef broth. Scrap all the frying bits off the bottom of the pan. Add the beef back into the Dutch Oven and the remaining beef broth. Stir to combine the garlic into the beef broth.

ADDING GARLIC, BEEF BROTH AND BEEF BACK TO THE PAN

THREE COOKING OPTIONS:

Stovetop METHOD:

On the stove bring the beef to a boil and let it simmer on the stove for 1 1/2 to 2 hours until the beef begins to fall apart. Make sure you periodically scrap the bottom with a flat wooden spoon so the beef doesn’t begin to stick to the bottom.

Oven Method:

Cover the Dutch Oven and place it into a 325-degree F oven for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, Make sure you periodically scrape the bottom with a flat wooden spoon so the beef doesn’t begin to stick to the bottom.

SLOW COOKER METHOD:

Cover and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours on low. Serve immediately with sauce.

FINISHED PRODUCT

There is no need to thicken the sauce it will automatically thicken due to the flour dredge that’s on the meat. Ensure you taste the Swiss Steak for salt and pepper prior to serving. I like to add a teaspoon spoonful of Vegeta at the end for more flavor. But this is optional. Serve with rice, noodles, or Creamy Garlic Mashed Potatoes.

hOW TO STORE AND REHEAT LEFTOVER EASY GARLIC SWISS STEAK?

Storing Easy Garlic Swiss Steak:

  1. Refrigeration: Allow any leftover Swiss steak to cool to room temperature. Transfer it to an airtight container or wrap it tightly in aluminum foil or plastic wrap.
  2. Label and Date: It’s a good practice to label the container with the contents and the date of preparation. This helps you keep track of how long it’s been stored.
  3. Refrigerate: Place the container in the refrigerator. It can be stored for up to 3-4 days.

Reheating Easy Garlic Swiss Steak:

  1. Stovetop Method:
    • Place a non-stick skillet or a saucepan over medium heat.
    • Add a small amount of oil or butter to prevent sticking, if desired.
    • Gently reheat the Swiss steak, turning it occasionally to ensure even warming. This method helps retain its tenderness.
  2. Oven Method:
    • Preheat your oven to a low temperature (around 325°F or 160°C).
    • Place the Swiss steak in an oven-safe dish and cover it with aluminum foil to prevent drying out.
    • Heat it in the oven until it reaches your desired temperature, usually for about 20-30 minutes.
  3. Microwave Method (for smaller portions):
    • Transfer a portion of the Swiss steak to a microwave-safe plate.
    • Use the microwave’s “reheat” function or use short intervals at a lower power setting, checking and turning the meat as needed.

Remember, gentle reheating helps preserve the tenderness of the meat. It’s best to avoid high heat, which can cause the beef to become tough or overcooked. Enjoy your reheated Garlic Swiss Steak!

HOW DO YOU FREEZE AND REHEAT LEFTOVER EASY GARLIC SWISS STEAK?

Freezing Leftover Easy Garlic Swiss Steak:

  1. Cooling: Allow the leftover Swiss steak to cool completely at room temperature.
  2. Packaging: Once cooled, wrap the steak tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Alternatively, place it in an airtight container or a heavy-duty freezer bag.
  3. Label and Date: Clearly label the package with the contents and the date of freezing. This helps you keep track of how long it’s been stored.
  4. Freeze: Place the wrapped or containerized steak in the freezer. It can be stored for up to 2-3 months.

Thawing and Reheating Frozen Swiss Steak:

  1. Thawing in the Refrigerator:
    • Transfer the frozen steak from the freezer to the refrigerator.
    • Allow it to thaw overnight. This slow thawing method helps maintain the meat’s texture and flavor.
  2. Reheating from Thawed:
    • Follow the reheating instructions provided in the previous response for stovetop, oven, or microwave methods.

Note: When reheating from frozen, it’s best to use the stovetop or oven methods for more even heating. Microwave thawing can be uneven, potentially leading to overcooked or partially thawed sections.

Always ensure that the steak is thoroughly heated to a safe internal temperature before serving. This ensures food safety and a delicious dining experience. Enjoy your reheated Garlic Swiss Steak!
