PLATE FULL OF RIBS

INGREDIENTS NEEDED TO MAKE IT

RIBS – Baby Back Pork Ribs are the best; they cook fall off-the-bone perfection every time. They do cost a little bit more, but you will have the best results with baby back ribs and I think it is worth the extra money. Another more budget-friendly option is to use spare ribs.

SEASONINGS – These can be simply seasoned with salt & pepper or use the dry rub listed in the recipe card below. The homemade rib rub below is easy and inexpensive to make.

BARBECUE SAUCE (optional) –  Use your favorite BBQ sauce or you can omit it completely! One of my kids thinks barbecue sauce is disgusting and just prefers salt & pepper ribs. My other child can’t get enough barbecue sauce hence why we have to make two slabs of ribs.

HOW TO PREPARE EASY OVEN BAKED RIBS?

In this recipe, the ribs are wrapped up in aluminum foil and baked low and slow,  for the most fall-off-the-bone tender meat.

HOW TO PREPARE THE RIBS AND REMOVE THE MEMBRANE from the ribs?

  • You will need to remove the membrane since it is tough and chewy once cooked. You can do it yourself or ask the butcher at the store to do it for you. To do it yourself gently slide a knife under the membrane, and then use your fingers to pull the membrane away from the bones. If it is slippery or difficult to remove, use a paper towel to take hold of it and pull.
  • Combine all the ingredients for the dry rub. You will have enough dry rub for both slabs of ribs.
RACK OF RIBS SEASONED WITH RUB
  • Preheat your oven to 300 degrees F.
  • Prepare a long piece of aluminum foil. Place the rib on the foil and season both sides with salt and pepper. I do not put salt and pepper in the rub recipe because it’s too easy to over-salt the ribs and ruin the meal.
  • Place the rib rub seasoning mixture all over the ribs on both sides. Tightly wrap them in the foil and place them on a large baking sheet.
  • Bake for three hours. Try not to open the oven or disturb the ribs until the three hours have passed.
WRAP RIBS IN FOIL AND GET READY TO BAKE
  • After three hours remove the ribs from the oven. Open the foil-wrapped ribs and brush on the barbecue/honey mixture. Place the ribs back in the oven leave the foil open and bake for another 5-10 minutes to carmelize the barbecue sauce. Watch it carefully you don’t want the barbecue sauce to burn.

PRO COOKING tips and TRICKS FOR TENDER OVEN BAKED RIBS

Why do oven-baked ribs take so long to cook?

Low and slow is the name of the game. Baby back ribs will be tender in about 2 hours in a 300 degrees F oven and after 3 hours they will fall off the bone. Begin checking them towards the end of the baking time and remove them from the oven when they are very tender when pierced with a fork.

What temperature should baby back ribs be baked at?

I have tested that baking between 300 and 325 degrees F is the best temperature. It’s best to bake ribs at a low temperature for a long time to break down the tough connective tissues.

Do you have to cover the ribs before placing them in the oven?

Yes, you have to cover or wrap the ribs in aluminum foil. Sealing the ribs in the foil traps the moisture and the juices won’t escape. This technique is best for tenderizing pork ribs.

Can this recipe work with other types of ribs?

You can use spare ribs, country-style, or St. Louis Ribs and this recipe will work. Baking times may be longer or it may be shorter based on the weight of the ribs and you will need to adjust your cooking time.

How do you know when they are done cooking?

Once the ribs have cooked in the oven for at least 3 hours, open a corner of the foil. Use a fork to pull off a little piece of meat. If the meat doesn’t pull away easily it is not tender and they need more cooking time. Seal them back up, add another 20-30 minutes, and check again. For a crispier texture, you can remove the foil during the last 15-20 minutes and brush on the barbecue sauce in the last 5-10 minutes of cooking.

How many people can you feed from one slab of baby back ribs?

You should count on half a rack person. So one rack can serve two people. This recipe calls for two racks and this is more than enough food for a family of four.

what to serve with Easy Oven Baked Ribs?

Another perfect accompaniment for this dish is my Balsamic Brussels Sprouts or Famous Paula Deen’s Corn Casserole. Oven-baked Ribs can served with this delicious Creamy Cole Slaw. The cool crunch is perfect to go along with the tender pork.
