Equipment

  • small ceramic appetizer dish

Ingredients

  • 3 yellow onions (large)(thinly sliced)
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme (or ½ teaspoon dried)

Dip Base

  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • ¾ cup sour cream
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • ½ cup white cheddar (or Gruyère)(shredded)
  • 6 slices Bacon (thick-cut bacon)(cooked crispy and crumbled)
  • Optional Garnish (chives, fresh thyme, or extra bacon)

Instructions

  • Caramelize the Onions: I start by melting the butter and oil in a large skillet over medium heat. I toss in my sliced onions with the salt and sugar, cooking them low and slow for about 20–25 minutes until they turn a deep, jammy golden brown.
  • Add the Aromatics: Once the onions are perfectly soft, I stir in the minced garlic, thyme, and Worcestershire sauce. I let them cook for just another minute until the kitchen smells amazing, then I pull the skillet off the heat to cool slightly.
  • Mix the Creamy Base: In a medium bowl, I beat the softened cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise together until the mixture is smooth and fluffy. Then, I fold in the shredded Gruyère (or cheddar) and that super crispy crumbled bacon.
  • Fold and Bake: I gently stir my warm caramelized onions into the cream cheese mixture until everything is well combined. I spread the dip into a small baking dish and pop it into a 350°F oven for about 15–20 minutes, or until the edges are bubbly and the cheese is melted.
  • Garnish and Serve: I love to finish the dish with a sprinkle of fresh chives and extra bacon bits right before serving. It’s best served warm with sturdy chips or toasted baguette slices for the ultimate party appetizer!
